Why should we memorize scriptures and quotes?

"May I suggest that in our family night gatherings we make it a project to memorize one scripture citation a week pertinent to this work. At the conclusion of a year our children will have on their lips a fund of scripture which will remain with them throughout their lives."

Elder Gordon B. Hinckley, April 1959 General Conference

"...It is desirable that our children should learn to memorize important passages; such that will leave a strong impression upon their lives; scriptural passages that they will use as their guiding star; scriptural passages that will help to form convictions in their minds of right and wrong; scriptural passages that will bring conviction to their hearts."
Elder Joseph M. Tanner, April 1901 General Conference

"I have discovered that many times you don't fully understand a scripture until you memorize it. And sometimes I have memorized a passage because it seemed important and valuable to me- then afterwards I discovered deeper meanings that I hadn't even known were there. When you find a passage that particularly impresses you, consider taking the time to commit it to memory, word perfect. Then not only will you be able to remember it, but you will probably grow in your understanding as well. But that's not all. By memorizing scripture you show the Lord that you esteem his words to be of great value- and then he will be more likely to speak to you and give you more."
Elder Gene R. Cook, "Searching the Scriptures", pg. 114

"I have a vision of thousands of missionaries going into the mission field with hundreds of passages memorized from the Book of Mormon so that they might feed the needs of a spiritually famished world."
President Ezra Taft Benson, October 1988 General Conference

"Second, prepare yourselves mentally. A mission requires a great deal of mental preparation. You must memorize missionary discussions, memorize scriptures, and ofttimes learn a new language. The discipline to do this is learned in your early years."
President Ezra Taft Benson, April 1985 General Conference

"Let me just say in general, I don't know how much memorizing you do. Some of you are returned missionaries and you know the value of memorization, of studying and of having things in your mind so that the Spirit can bring to your thoughts those things that you need to be moved to remember. My experience is that if I don't pack a lot of things into my mind and into my heart there is a vacuum there, and it's pretty hard for the Spirit to move a vacuum. If you give the Spirit a few building blocks to push around at the right time, some very significant things can happen in your lives."
John Welch, Teachings of the Book of Mormon, Lecture 97

"I suggest that you memorize scriptures that touch your heart and fill your soul with understanding. When scriptures are used as the Lord has caused them to be recorded, they have intrinsic power that is not communicated when paraphrased. Sometimes when there is a significant need in my life, I review mentally scriptures that have given me strength. There is great solace, direction, and power that flow from the scriptures, especially the words of the Lord."
Elder Richard G. Scott, October 1999 General Conference

I love all these quotes! I didn't put all the quotes on this page, there are a couple others around the site.  Have fun looking.
